Just had my second driver pass their test this year with no driver faults. Well done Michael.

Building backlinks to your pages is an essential part of SEO (short for Search Engine Optimization) for two reasons. The first reason is that it helps your pages get indexed faster, which is very important because you want the search engines to find them as soon as possible and crawl them regularly. The second reason is that it helps your pages get higher search engine rankings for the keywords of your choice. The more backlinks you have, the better. Period.
However, building backlinks can be a time-consuming, boring process. You can outsource the process to an agency and pay a lot of money… Or you can do it yourself with SocialMonkee! SocialMonkee is an instant backlink builder allowing you to build 25 unique backlinks, every day, FREE! All links are on unique C-Class IP addresses and domains. Submitting a page to SocialMonkee via the members area takes under two minutes, but there’s an even faster way! The DSA have today announced that the new test routes for the independent drive section of the driving test will not be published. This is to prevent instructors learning the routes and teaching them to their pupils. The pupils should be able to follow road signs and directions where ever they are, whether they are familiar with the area or not. This is ‘real life’ driving, and the new test will mimick this.
The new driving test with the independent drive section will begin on 3rd October.
To practice your independent drive on your driving lessons in Bournemouth areas, contact Rapid Results Driving School now.

So, we have just seen the Stig, from Top Gear revealed as Michael Schumacher?! Quite honestly, I am not totally convinced. Top Gear likes to have a laugh but I do realise it’s not April 1st. What do you reckon – do you believe it? Comment at will.

Click through stats to your website are now available in the members area. Please bear in mind that visiting your website is not the only way a potential pupil can make contact with you. They can also:
- Phone
- Email you from your listing
- Initiate a ‘Text Call Back’ enquiry
- Utilise the Crash Course or Driving Lesson Enquiry Service
These visits to your website are from potential pupils looking for driving lessons in your town and are therefore highly targetted leads. If they are not converting to actual enquiries/pupils, you may wish investigate how to improve the conversion rate of your website.
To maximise conversion from your listing, please ensure that you have:
- Listed ALL the towns and villages you cover – this is very, very important. Please advise us from the pre-formatted email link that will appear after you have updated your listing if you do this so that new pages are built for any new towns. It is only one click.
- Uploaded an image/graphic of you/your car/logo etc. People’s eyes are attracted to images.
- Written something compelling in the ‘School Information’ section of your listing. Give the visitor a good reason to check out your website or to make contact with you otherwise they may just click on somone elses listing.
- List the post codes you cover in the ‘Counties Covered‘ section of your listing. The directory is driven by town names as that is what the majority of people search for. However, some people will use a post code – give them a chance to find your listing.

A new Knowledge Base & FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions) has been added to the Driving Schools Directory website.
The knowledge base’s structure and content is obviously in its early day’s but it will be built up over time.
This is where it would be great if you could help us here. It would be brilliant if we could have the numero uno knowledge base for everything and anything related to driving. I think to achieve that though it would need to be a team effort. Do you fancy being part of that team?
So, please browse on over, have a look and see if you can add anything to it, whether that is a full question and answer or simply a question to be answered.
http://www.driving-schools-directory.co.uk/faqs/
The basic structure is layed out but if you feel there should be another category or sub-category, just mention that in your submission or drop me an email.
I’m really looking forward to developing this with you.

The driving Schools Directory has undergone a major face-lift which
went live at the weekend and, at the same time, we changed to
different and faster servers. As yet, the domain name has not fully
propagated around the internet which means that currently I am
seeing the old website and others the new. Effectively therefore,
two databases and email systems are active at the moment and I am
trying to hold back on altering anything until the website has
resolved fully. We wouldn’t want to get into a “kerfuffle”!
This should all pan out within the next 24 hours – we did hope that
we would be OK by Monday morning but the internet Gods haven’t been
kind to us. In the meantime, if you are awaiting confirmation of
new listings or a reply on anything from ourselves, please be
patient with us. Nothing will be missed and we will respond as soon
as we are able to – hopefully very shortly.

Following up from the announcement yesterday about the new pupil reviews feature I figured that it could be awkward to get across exactly what you wanted your pupils to do.
In the members area, you will now find a small form (on the ‘Pupil Reviews’ page). If you complete your town name and hit the submit button, a new page will open with 8 ready made business cards for you to print, cut and hand out.
If you wish, you can also alter the actual content of the card. Don’t write War & Peace though as all of it may not appear!
Mark.

An exciting new feature has been added to the directory for the Featured Listings. Your pupils can now leave feedback/a review of your driving school.
All they need to do is to browse to your listing where they will find a link to add their review. The link will be on the summary listing on the main ‘towns’ pages and also on your full listing if they chose to view that.
None of the reviews will appear until you have had a chance to review it and then approve it from within your members area.
Like any content submission form on the web, they can be subject to ‘low life’ trying to push their latest life enhancing wonder pills. A CAPTCHA image will need to be completed before the form will submit so hopefully that should stop the ‘bots’ auto submitting. You will be able to delete reviews if required.
If your driving school has reviews, the number of reviews will show on the summary listing – the full reviews will be on the expanded/full listing.
It is important to encourage your pupils to leave feedback. The more positive comments on your listing, the more likely it will be for potential pupils to want to make contact. Also, as the number of reviews will be on the summary listings, the more you have, the greater the chance of it catching a browsers eye.
An additional benefit is that as all listings are now a separate web page (that change was made about a month ago), the more content that is added to them the more the search engines will want to spider them and therfore, a greater chance of your listing page itself being found in the search engines.
This new feature really is a win/win situation.
As usual, feedback, good or bad, is always welcomed – just drop me an email.
Mark.

I have had a few emails recently either asking or complaining that we were telephoning driving instructors and requesting that they could pay for more pupils.
I too am a driving instructor and I received a call the other day from someone syaing they were from the Driving Schools Register. They were looking for ADI’s in my area to ‘partner’ with them as they had a load of enquiries for my ‘area’.
They also mentioned the DIA (Driving Instructors Association) of which I am a member. It sounded as though/the inference was, the DIA had given them my number and my assumption was that they were therfore in some way affiliated with them. I of course took interest from a competitive point of view!
I requested their website information/address so that I could look into their request further – I had no interest in more pupils. The lady on the phone couldn’t tell me what it was precisely but to ‘Google’ ‘driving schools register’ and something else which, I cannot now remember. The call didn’t last too long once she knew I wouldn’t do anything over the phone and wanted to consider/investigate further.
There are other driving schools directories out there but I believe www.driving-Schools-directory.co.uk to be the largest, human edited one in the UK and growing daily. Well, we are the only one that I have seen that openly displays the number of UK towns we have listed. We do not list ‘teaser’ details ‘scraped’ from other websites or from purchased commercial databases. All the driving schools listed have specifically requested to do so.
I think next time I get ‘the’ call, I will fein more interest to see exactly what they are promising and what the cost is likely to be and how they want to take my money.
Rest assured, if you receive any of these type of telephone calls, they will not be from ourselves.
Regards,
Mark

Having a web site for your driving school is an absolute must these days. If a potential pupil looks at two driving schools, one has a website that provides them with the information they are looking for and the other doesn’t, who do you think they are likely to call? It also makes it easier for them to communicate with you via email.
We have made it very easy to have your own great looking website that you can update yourself at any time – no special skills are required with our very easy Content Management System (CMS). If you can type an email or a text document you are more than qualified to update your website whenever you want.
The process is simple. Select the template you prefer, choose a domain name for your website, we will upload and set-up everything then simply login to your CMS control panel and input your content. Whenever you hit the ‘Save’ button, your website will display the content you have just entered.
There are five pages included with every website including a contact page with a pre-built web enquiry form so that you do not miss those important emails. All emails will be directed through your normal email address so on your business cards, letter headings etc., you can have any email address you like e.g. lessons@MyWebsite.co.uk and they will all arrive at your usual email address – no messy email configuration required.

I hope you all had good Christmas and New Years celebrations.
Now is traditionally the time we reflect on the past year and start to plan ahead for the ensuing year. Whilst I was doing this I came across some interesting data that I thought I would share with you.
We all know that the Christmas period for our industry is as dead as the proverbial dodo. Right? Did you realise though that demand for driving schools actually declines from the end of the Summer period all the way up to Christmas?
Below is a graph from Google Trends showing the search activity for the most popular keyword phrases in our industry. I found this most fascinating and enlightening.

The key point to take from this is that despite how busy we may be in the Summer, we should think twice about declining new business at this time if we wish to keep adequate levels of work throughout the declining second half of the year.
Directory Updates
——————-
You may have noticed that I have introduced a voting system for all the driving schools listed. This does not affect the display order of the listings but serves to add some interactivity with the web sites users.
You may wish to let your pupils know and get them voting for you! Actually, you may want to get over there and vote for yourself as well!
Also, the listings no longer show all the driving schools detail when the pages first load. This has been done to ‘tidy’ up the pages and make it easier for the end user to see what is actually there. They can then expand the listings that attract them.
The directory continues to perform very well for the main industry keywords of driving schools, driving school & driving lessons etc. as a result of the continuing process of optimising the website. Due to this, daily traffic continues to increase and new records are being hit on a weekly basis.
Search Engine Optimisation
—————————-
I have had a number of questions from ADI’s as to how they can get their own websites to rank higher in the search engines.
It is very difficult, and time consuming, to deliver this by email. Indeed Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a massive subject and can take years to learn, but probably never master, and is not a one off job – it is a continuing process.
I plan to do some videos covering the basics but which will, nontheless, have significant results for you. I did plan to use my own driving school website which, I reluctantly admit, is old, stale, poorly designed and certainly not SEO’d – hey, I’ve had other things on my plate!:-) I thought that it may be an idea to use one of the driving schools on the directory so, if you would like me to use your own website as an example for the videos, please let me know by returning an email. If your website is used, you will need to be prepared to let me have the following in due course:
FTP Username
FTP Password
FTP URL
If you did not build and upload your website from your PC using MS Frontpage or other web editing software but used a web based Content Management System (CMS), I would need your login details.
This information is required so that I could optimise a webpage and upload it to the internet.
I would also need access to the websites statistics so the ‘before & after’ could be asscessed.
Have a great 2008.

Having passed your driving test is a great feeling and an achievement to be proud of. Unfortunately, then comes the expense! Buying a car is one thing but the cost of young drivers insurance these days is exorbitant. As a result of this, young people try and save money by buying an older cheaper car. The problem here is that these cars, apart from being less reliable, are not as safe as a modern cars and often lack safety features such as Anti Lock Brakes, high NCAP safety ratings, Airbags etc. Also, modern cars are more fuel efficient and this alone will drain your wallet.

Any feedback you have on these systems and how it is

————————-
Do Yourself A Favour!
————————-
Please take a look at your listing.
A shortcut you can use is:
www.driving-schools-directory.co.uk/instructors.asp?IN=YOURTOWNNAME
That will get you straight to one of your pages.
When you get to each of the towns pages that you cover,
please do 3 things:
—–
ONE
—–
Take a look at the slightly re-designed layout.
Comments?
At the bottom of your entry you will
see a link ‘Add to del.icio.us’.
That is the most popular Social Bookmarking
website out there in CyberSpace!
Click the link and bookmark the towns page
for each town you cover. For those of you
with umpteen towns (you know who you are!!)
perhaps initially bookmark your major towns.
You may need to sign up with del.icio.us
but that is a quick and painless process.
The ‘Tags’ to use are up to you but I would
suggest something like:
DrivingSchool, DrivingLessons, DrivingInstructor,
DrivingSchoolTownName
Once you have done that, move over to your own
website and do exactly the same!
——————————–
WHY FOR PETE’S SAKE? I AM BUSY!!
——————————–
Easy, that website carries an awful lot of
weight and authority.
The more times that website points back to
the towns pages and your website, the more
the search engines will love you, the more
traffic you will get and therefore more
business.
You may want to use that website in the
future for bookmarking web pages rather
than than using the traditional browser
bookmarks / favourites. It is easier
to find what you saved because of the
‘tags’ you have used and you can access
these pages from any computer. It is
the way to go folks!
WARNING!
If you bookmark the same page from the
same computer numerous times, that is Spam
and not a good thing. Just please do it the once.
——
TWO
——
Take a look at the towns you cover.
Ensure that you have ALL the towns and
villages you cover. If you need to amend
the listing, Sponsored listings can
do so from the Members area.
Please drop me an email to say that you have
updated the listing and I will then
ensure we have a towns page for
each of your towns.
Ordinary listings, please drop me
an email with the additional towns you
wish to have placed.
————————————
WHY MARK? I AM STILL BUSY YOU KNOW!!
————————————
People search for things like:
driving school laleham
Laleham is near / part of Staines.
If I didn’t list that town/village,
the pupil would contact a driving school
that did have it listed on the Laleham
towns page notwithstanding
that I also covered that town!
People DO NOT search for:
‘etc.’
‘and all surrounding areas’
See where I am coming from?
——
THREE
——
Once finished bookmarking the towns
pages and your website pages,
have a GREAT WEEKEND!
I guess I will be updating listings
and the directory. Hey ho!
Filed under Improving Your Web Site Traffic, Latest News by
——————-
GREAT NEWS!
——————-
There have been many changes recently to
the Driving Schools Directory and all of
them are GREAT NEWS FOR YOU.
I won’t list them all in this email as it
would be too long!
——————-
TEXT CALL BACK
——————-
How many times do you think you have missed
pupil enquiries because you have been on
lessons and could not take a call? Not
everyone likes to leave a spoken message.
Potential pupils can now SEND A TEXT MESSAGE
to YOU directly FROM YOUR LISTING on the
directory.
All you need to do is call them back when
you are between pupils. NO MORE MISSED PUPILS.
This is available for all Sponsored Listings.
——————-
REAL TIME EMAILS
——————-
When a PUPIL REQUESTS DRIVING LESSONS or
intensive courses, at the very same time as
they click the submit button, an EMAIL IS SENT
TO YOU if you cover their town.
These PUPILS are therefore RED HOT.
If there are no Sponsored Listings for the town,
an email will be sent to the normal listings.
You will need to bear in mind though, as soon
as a driving school upgrades for that town,
these emails will no longer be sent.
———————
TEXT ON YOUR WEBSITE
———————
As I am writing this email, I have a thought!!
Would you also like the facility to provide
your website visitors with the option to text
you a call back request?
It could probably be done – reply to this email
if you think you MAY be interested in Text Back
facility. If there is enough demand I could
probably arrange this.
———————
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
———————
If you already have a Sponsored Listing, please
continue to check the Members Area for new
pupils – if they make a spelling mistake on
their driving lesson request, our system will
not be able to match the request to you.
For members with ordinary unpaid listings, please
see what a Sponsored Listing can do FOR YOU and
YOUR DRIVING SCHOOL BUSINESS.

Driving Schools Directory.
P.S. Just to let you know, we are considering a price

P.P.S. I will let you know of the other improvements
to the directory shortly just as soon as we have finished
the work.
There are three developments to the Driving Schools Directory that I
thought you should know about.
ONE
Sponsored listings can now place an image on their listing – this
could either be your school logo or say, a picture of your training
car. You will be able to do this by logging into your members Area.
Please note that the images, when displayed, will have a maximum
width of 250 pixels. This is to ensure that the web pages are not
skewed by large images. Whilst the images will be down-sized for
display, the server will still need to serve the underlying image.
If there are a number of very large images therefore, the pages
could end up being slower to be served. I would therefore request
that, where possible, you reduce the size of your images before
uploading them.
TWO
Following Ads have been introduced. These will give your driving
school improved visibility. There will only be one of these per
town so, first come, first served I am afraid.
Full details can be found by clicking the following link:
http://www.driving-schools-directory.co.uk/following-ad/
THREE
We have changed servers for the directory. This has been a major
undertaking and whilst we believe we have covered all the bases,
some loss of functionality may have crept in unnoticed! If you come
across an area of the web site that does not seem to be performing
as it should, please be good enough to let us know by dropping an
email to admin@driving-schools-directory.co.uk.

I wonder if you could do me a few favours? The only cost will be a
few minutes of your time but your driving school should benefit in
the long run.
Favour 1
As you may be aware, I have set up a ‘Lens’ (a mini web site) at
Squidoo.com. That lens has links pointing back to the Driving
Schools Directory (DSD). The more popular that gets, the more
traffic it receives and therefore more traffic (visitors) TO DSD.
As a result of increased traffic to DSD, the directory becomes
even more popular and there is therefore, a greater chance of a
prospective pupil seeing your listing and making contact about
driving lessons.
Could I ask you to visit the following link and click the ‘Your
Rating’ stars near the top, middle of the web page. You may have to
sign up but that is a quick and painless process. Once you have
signed up, you may even want to create your own ‘Lens’ – I have
been receiving very favourable reports of new business from other
driving instructors who have built a Lens. It doesn’t take a long
and could be fun!
http://www.squidoo.com/driving-lessons
Favour 2
I have set up a new page to collect County / Town(s) information.
Here you will be able to describe or say something about the
county or town you work within. Why?
The search engines love original and fresh content on web pages. To
boost the counties and towns pages, where your listings reside, I
will use this content as additional information on these
pages which should help search engine popularity and therefore
traffic. More traffic = more business for you.
It doesn’t matter whether you write one line or a book! The more
information we can get, the better. I am sure most of you could
mention one or two things that your County or Town(s) are known
for, specialise in, historical point of interest etc. There is an
example on the new page.
Please visit the following page now and let us know why we would,
or would not (!) want to live or visit your county or town.
http://www.driving-schools-directory.co.uk/county-info.asp
Many thanks in advance and have a great weekend,

We are pleased to announce the launch of Easy DIY Websites.
The Easy DIY Websites system will enable literally anybody to create their own professional looking website in minutes! This is an ideal solution for those driving instructors and driving schools to have a web presence despite a lack of technical knowledge or skills in web building.
Your own domain name is included in the package e.g. www.Freds-SOM.co.uk and, in addition to the graphics normally included with the system, driving instructors will receive a special School of Motoring graphics set so you don’t have to get your camera or camera phone out before you can start building your web site.
The first years web hosting is also included within the cost of the package.
The Easy DIY Websites system includes 5 pages for your web site including a contact page. Your email address will not show on the contact page so no Spam for you! The pupil will simply fill out a form and you will receive an email with their details and enquiry.
The system is very, very easy to use “out of the box” but to cover all the bases, you will also receive a complete manual with actual screenshots of the system to make life easier for you and on the Easy DIY Websites web site is a complete suite of training videos to help and guide you every step of the way.
Check out the complete system at www.Easy-DIY-Websites.com and then visit the Driving Schools Directory for a special offer and discount for driving instructors and driving schools.

A small change has been made to the way Featured Driving Schools are now displayed. The “More Information” area of the listing will now reflect the actual formatting used. Previously, any paragraphs, line breaks or bullet points etc. were ignored when the listing was displayed i.e. the information was shown as one complete block of text.
Now, all formatting will be reflected on the “live” listing thereby making your enhanced listing look more professional and helping it to stand out even better than it currently is.

I think that is a fantastic result in a little over 24 hours. As the lenses and group get more popular more traffic will be attracted to them and therfore more traffic to your web sites. New business? Think of the traffic as a funnel. The more traffic that is poured in at the top, the more that drips out of the bottom as new pupils.
We have over 500 driving schools registered on the driving schools directory and with only 6 of them getting involved on the Squidoo thing, look at the rankings seen already. Imagine what would happen if everybody got involved!!
I personally believe it is very easy to set up a lens – what do you people who have set up the lenses above think? Why not post a comment on this post to let others know how easy (or not) it was for you? If you prefer, post a comment in the forum. Actually, why not also write a Post about your new Lens, with a link back to your web site of course!
I have learnt today whilst updating and adding modules to the lenses that a factor in their ranking is modification and updating of your lens. A simple way to do that is to add an RSS module. You can use the RSS from this blog or from the bookmarks site. All you need to to is click the RSS link, copy the URL (web address) from your browser and use that in the RSS module on Squidoo. Everytime the RSS feed is updated i.e. everytime a post is added here or an entry on the bookmarks site, your Lens will be updated – Simple!
Keep checking in here for updates and don’t forget to check your colleagues Lenses above!
Once we have cracked Squidoo, we are going to attack MySpace and use the 2 to bounce off of each other to produce sparkling results!

Have you ever checked out www.squidoo.com? It’s another social bookmarking site that receives a ton of traffic.
Anyone can register and build their own “lens”. This is effectively your own web page hosted on Squidoo but it is all point and click so no web authoring skills are required at all.
Whats the point? Well, more backlinks for your web site plus additional traffic. If a youngster is searching for driving lessons (and this place is full of youngsters, just like MySpace.com), given that there is minimal/no competition there for our little niche market, there is a very good likelyhood of them visiting your web site.
What you need to do. If you just want another backlink, visit http://www.squidoo.com/driving-lessons and near the bottom of the page you will see a section for adding links (Good Driving School Links). Go ahead and put the link to your driving school.
For the more adventurous(!), if you decide to build your own lens for your driving school, or whatever, which will only take a few minutes, then visit http://www.squidoo.com/groups/driving-lessons . This is a group I have set up for “Driving Lessons” and will hold a collection of “lenses” relative to the group subject. You can place your lens within that group.
Now, the more links that are added to the Driving Lessons lens and the more lenses that are added to the Driving Lessons Group, the more popular they will become thereby attracting more visitors. It is very viral by its nature. Why have I done this? Well, the more popular the lens or group becomes, the more people will end up backlinking to the Driving Schools Directory and its importance will therefore increase in the eyes of the search engines. That increased popularity equates to higher search engine rankings, more visitors and therefore more referrals for yourselves.
Oh, did I mention that Google ads and Amazon adds are displayed on the lenses and if these are clicked by visitors, you will share in a slice of the income! A no brainer really; more good backlinks and an income.
Get on over there folks!

Just received this email (extract) from the DIA (Driving Instructors Association) – in case you are not members, I thought you may like to see it. What are your views on the questions? Feel free to enter the discussion and see what other views driving instructors have at:

BBC Survey of British Driving Instructors:
BBC and the Driving Instructors Association Survey Jan 2007
The BBC 1 current affairs series Real Story with Fiona Bruce are producing a programme looking at the issue of young drivers in Britain today and whether more could be done to make them fit to drive on our roads. Furthermore we will be investigating ideas as to ways of improving the current driving test to achieve these aims.
This short survey is designed to obtain the views of those professionals charged with teaching learner drivers regarding the current test and what could be done to improve young driver competency and safety.
Yours Sincerely,
Kirk Barber
Note: For the purposes of our survey, the definition of young drivers will be those aged between 17 and 24.
1. Do you believe the UK driving test is producing safe and competent young drivers?
2. Would you like to see the introduction, in some form, of a ‘Graduated Licensing’ scheme?
3. Do you believe learner drivers should complete a minimum number of compulsory tuition hours with an instructor prior to taking their driving test?
4. Have you ever been verbally or physically abused by a young learner driver?
5. Do you think the legal driving age should be raised to 18?
6. Do you think young drivers should be subject to a night-time driving curfew?
7. Do you think the hazard perception section of the current driving test is an accurate measure of a driver’s ability to perceive hazards under real conditions?
8. Did you pass or fail the hazard perception test on your first attempt?

The new social bookmarking site is now up at http://bookmarks.driving-schools-directory.co.uk. this is a web site that will collect all good links to driving related web sites. Again the benefit here is additional backlinks for your web sites. The front page looks sparse at the moment as this will only display the most popular links / bookmarks and as there are not many currently, they will not show up. You can see current links by vlicking the “tags” or “recent” links.
The more instructors and pupils that put up their favourite links, the better the web site will work for us.
Registration up is a very quick and painless process.
To explain what a social bookmarking web site is e.g. like Del.icio.us, Furl, Digg etc. I have copied a posting from a private forum at www.trafficdomination.com – I have been given permission!
You know, I was just thinking about how many people I know understand THAT social bookmarking and tagging is a major thing right now, but don’t understand WHY people actually use social bookmarking.
Many people use thee sites for social, fun, purely entertainment and ways of interacting with their friends.
So when blogs came out and got popular, rarely did any internet marketers yearn to start a career as a “Professional Blogger” but we did look at how to USE the blogging technology to improve our overall web presence.
The same thing is with social bookmarking. A lot of people jumped headfirst into the tag and ping thing, without really knowing – or needing to know – why social bookmarks ARE such the rage.
But now that we’re building Tag Sites with the hopes of real people coming and using it, I think it’s important to make sure we understand this, because we need to customize our tag sites with the end user in mind.
I’m going to write this to you as a potential USER of social bookmarks, not as a marketer who just uses it. If I can convince you of the personal need – or at least, the personal benefit – of using social bookmarking, then you will be in a much better place as a marketer.
***What Is Social Bookmarking?
Everyone knows the ‘favorites’ or ‘bookmarks’ in the IE or Firefox browser. You find a site you want to save the URL, so you click “Add To Favorites” or “Bookmark This Site” and you’re able to come back to it whenever you want.
This is known as “Bookmarking”
So, add the word “Social” ahead of it, and you have the same functionality, with two differences:
a) The bookmark is no longer IN your browser, it’s ON a website
b) The bookmark is no longer PRIVATE, it’s PUBLIC.
The most common question I hear at this point is, “ok, but WHY do people use it? I just don’t get WHY.”
The first easy answer is, people like sharing.
But to make this more clear, here are a bunch of scenarios to show some benefits that social bookmarking offers, which can’t really be achieved in any other simple, generic way (and this ‘simple’ and ‘generic’ point is important).
Ok, lets say you’re a dog lover, and you’re always finding cool, funny, interesting, helpful sites about dogs. You want to share them with all your dog loving friends. Instead of forwarding the URLs by email all the time, clogging people’s email boxes, you just stick it up on your Delicious account, and anyone who knows that you always find cool dog sites, can go to your page on delicious and see all your posts.
ALSO you can see which other people on delicious have also bookmarked the same URLs as you, so you can click on their name, and see what else they’ve bookmarked. You can find new URLs this way, that you wouldn’t have found otherwise.
ALSO, imagine one day you’re at a friend’s house, you bring your dog over to play with your friend’s dog. And your friend mentions that his dog has some medical issue, and you say “OH, I just bookmarked an important article on that medical issue!” So you immediately fire up your delicious account, and give your friend that URL.
so this is one group of scenarios where you, as a dog lover, can benefit from having a delicious account.
****Having A Delicious Account For Your Business
This has started to become really big as well. One example I’ve been tracking for a while is Adobe. The company started its own delicious account and posts to it very frequently. Users of Adobe products can well benefit from going often to this URL:
http://del.icio.us/Adobe
Another Idea: Imagine you’re a speaker and consultant on a certain topic. As part of being the “guru” on that topic, it helps to stay on top of current developments. One way of doing that, and adding to your “audience” to have a delicious account where you tag all the URLs that you feel are timely and relevant to the topic you’re discussing.
So, when you give a presentation at an event, you can use certain URLs as examples to back up your points. And at the end of the talk, you can say “please go to my delicious account at this address [ ] because I update these URLs every day/week”
And it’s a way of building an audience with people just by them appreciating your ferreting. And every 10 links, or so, you could post a link “HIRE ME” or something like that which links to a page with your phone number
